My Story.
In 2006, I had spent the year training for my first marathon, which was the San Francisco Nike Woman’s Marathon. This marathon gave all those that complete the 26.2 mile run a Tiffany’s necklace, and if I was going to run a marathon, then I was going to run for Tiffany’s.
I was so excited and blowing myself away with what I could accomplish because I wasn’t born with a runner’s body, if you know what I mean! Yet, each week I kept accomplishing the miles that I needed to get done in order to be prepared for the mental and physical challenge of running a marathon.
At the time, I was enrolled at the UCLA graduated interior design program. I was driving from Orange County, California to Los Angeles three times a week, which was a two-hour commute. In class, I sat next to a woman that was born in China but grew up in Turkey. She was now living in Los Angeles and owned a spa called Angel’s Healing Touch. She was much older than I was but always a delight.
One day after I had arrived from a grueling commute, she turned to me and said stick your tongue out. It was an odd request but I went with it. She put glasses on and look at my tongue closely. She grunted and shook her head. She looked at me and said:
“You’re very sick.” She said.
“I’m training for a marathon!” I laughed. “You got it wrong but thanks.”
Two days later, I got the results from my Pap smear and found out that the results weren’t good. My doctor brought me into the office and let me know that I needed to have immediate surgery to remove cervical cancer. He canceled my marathon, scheduled my surgery, and told me that I’d most likely never be able to carry children to full term. I was only 29.
Back in class, I asked that woman how she knew I was sick before my doctor did. She explained that she was a Chinese Herbalist and that she knew I was sick from my overall skin color and energy. She told me that I needed to stop running so my body could heal, she brought me Chinese herbs to help fight the illness, and she had me come to her spa where she performed a healing ceremony that included sage, crystals, chanting, and healing touch.
I followed all of her suggestions. I also listened to my doctor and went in for my surgery. I’ll never recall that I literally did the last long run for my marathon training, 21 miles, which I did for myself, and then the very next day I had a $25,000 surgery that removed large portions of cervical cancer.
Everything that I knew about health shifted during that time. I realized that the path of healing was more than western medicine.
I’m proud to share that as a result of using fitness, food, and mindful practices that I gave birth to my children at home with midwives when I was in my late thirties. Don’t accept that others say about your body. With energetic work and practicing best lifestyle practices you can literally rewrite your life story.
What is an Integrative Health Coach?
An Integrative Health Coach is a mentor that looks at the entire picture of your life to help you thrive. Basically, you can drink all the kale smoothies that you want but if you hate your job, your health won’t thrive. So sessions with me include talking about life off the plate and out of the gym.
Many women that I work with discuss the struggle to run their families, be healthy, and manage their business that includes social media. The laundry list of what women have on their plate is large these days but I love to coach women on how they manage their lives with success and love the journey. It’s all about making the daily life fun and filled with ease.
